What you see is what you get. I began these experiments when I was pregnant with Sergio. And periodically in line at the health department for sonar appointments. A real stress--the clerks were always in a foul mood. One morning in line, the woman in front of me started screaming at the clerk. The clerk started screaming back. Like some kind of Pavlovian reflex. I do what you do. Whether I want to or not.

Time for a change. When my turn came, the clerk was still aggressive. And my instinct was to be aggressive, too. Instead, I was sweet and slow. Like melasses. I smiled and took my time talking. He looked surprised. Then smiled and spoke slowly, too. Reprogrammatic. We, too, are part of our environment. |
